Carvill Group Board Members

  • RORY K CARVILL
    Group Executive Chairman

  • Rory Carvill spent his formative years as an executive at C T Bowring from 1960-1977 where he ultimately became responsible for the Treaty Casualty and Professional Liability Division prior to forming his own reinsurance company, R. K. Carvill & Co. Ltd in London in April 1977 of which he is Chairman.  Rory is also Chairman of R. K. Carvill (International Holdings) Ltd and R. K. Carvill (Holdings) Ltd.

  • SIR MICHAEL EDWARDES
    Group Deputy Chairman

  • After two years as a consultant to Carvill, Sir Michael was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Group on the 1st January 1988. He has a wide range experience running major UK and foreign enterprises including Chloride Group, British Leyland, ICL, Dunlop and Minorco. Sir Michael is a Director of some six companies.

  • GEORGE P LAGOS
    Director of Carvill Holding Company

  • George has over 25 years of experience in the property and casualty insurance industry, including fourteen years with the New Hampshire Insurance Group, an AIG subsidiary, where he was Vice President and General Counsel. George has held directorships with a number of industry-related entities, including affiliated primary companies of AIG and Swiss Re. In 1994 George took the position of President and CEO of Syndicated Services Company, Inc., an insurance and reinsurance management and administrative company owned by R. K Carvill. George stepped down from this role in 2006 but remains affiliated with Carvill in his role as a director of the Holding Company and a member of the Executive and Audit Committees; Chairman of the Carvill Employee Trust, and; Chairman of Avoca Underwriting Partners, Carvill’s US primary underwriting platform.

  • DAVID M THOMAS
    Joint CEO of Carvill & CEO of R. K. Carvill & Co. Ltd

  • David joined Carvill in 1980. He has run various operating divisions at Carvill, with particular emphasis on specialty lines, captives and program business, and been involved in developing new markets and products. He was appointed to the board in September 1989. David was appointed Managing Director of R. K. Carvill & Co. Ltd in November 2004 and subsequently appointed Chief Executive Officer in April 2005. He was appointed joint Chief Executive Officer of Carvill Group in April 2005.

  • JOHN P CAVANAGH
    Joint CEO of Carvill, Chairman of Carvill Re & Vice Chairman of Carvill America, Inc.

  • John began his career in 1975 in London with Lloyd’s brokers Alexander Howden & Company, and later joined Willis Faber & Dumas in the North America Reinsurance area in 1977, becoming a Divisional Director in 1982. During this period he spent a lengthy secondment working with Johnson & Higgins and Wilcox in New York. In 1984, Cavanagh joined J. H. Minet & Co. Ltd as Director of the North American Insurance Division, and during 1987, he became Deputy Managing Director of Minet Re, Ltd. John joined Carvill in 1988 as a Director of R. K. Carvill & Co. Ltd, and was appointed Vice Chairman of Carvill America, Inc. in 1996. John was appointed Chairman of Carvill Re in November 2004 and joint CEO of Carvill in April 2005.

  • WILLIAM J ADAMSON
    Chief Executive Officer of Carvill America, Inc. and Director of Carvill Group

  • Bill Adamson is the Chief Executive Officer of Carvill America, Inc. and is based in the Chicago office.  As CEO of Carvill America, Bill is responsible for overseeing production for the group’s three U.S. offices and Bermuda. Bill has more than 30 years of experience in the reinsurance industry.  Prior to joining Carvill, Bill was CEO of CNA Re, where he was responsible for the strategic direction, geographic development and growth of its global business operations. He held a number of senior management positions during his tenure with CNA Re, including president and chief operating officer.  Bill received his B.S. in Insurance with distinction from the University of Arizona, Tucson.  Bill joined Carvill in April 2003 as Chief Operating Officer of Carvill America, Inc. and was promoted to CEO in January 2004.

  • ANDREW K CARVILL
    Director of Carvill London Ltd and Director of Carvill Group

  • Andrew began his career in the insurance industry in 1989 working for Greig Fester Limited, initially in a technical role working on retrocessional business, before moving into the broker placing unit focusing on Japanese, Australian and United Kingdom composite property business. In 1993 he was seconded to the GJ Sullivan Companies in California and worked on a variety of types of business. He joined Carvill in 1994 working on Directors and Officers Liability, Legal Malpractice and miscellaneous Professional Errors and Omissions Liability. Between 1997 and 2000, Andrew was based in the company’s Chicago office. He was appointed to the board in September 2000, and since September 2003, has led a small team focused on specialty program business, both Property and Liability, emanating from the United States. Andrew was appointed Managing Director of Carvill Re in November 2004.

  • ROBERT MARSDEN, JR.
    President of Carvill Atlanta Office

  • Robert was a founding member of the Carvill Atlanta office in 1989 and became President in 1997. He brings more than 20 years of experience in the reinsurance industry, focusing primarily on specialty casualty business. Prior to joining Carvill, Bobby began his career in the London market with Willis Faber and headed G.L. Hodson’s Atlanta operations. Robert received his B.S. in Industrial Management from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

  • NIGEL P CLARK
    President of Carvill (Bermuda) Ltd

  • Nigel entered the reinsurance industry in 1977 with Regis Underwriting Agencies, an underwriting management company owned by Sedgwick, which was amalgamated into & became River Thames Insurance Company. Nigel worked in the Non-Marine Treaty underwriting area, eventually having responsibility for all of the Treaty underwriting. Nigel moved to Bermuda in 1989 to join Anchor Underwriting Agencies Ltd which was owned by, & underwrote for, Virginia Surety Company as well as Paumanock Insurance Company, becoming Chief Underwriting Officer in 1991. In 1993 he moved to the broking side of the business, becoming Senior Vice President of Intere (Bermuda) Ltd. a division of Intere, (part of the Minet Re Worldwide group). In October 1996 he joined Carvill to form Carvill (Bermuda) Ltd., a Bermuda based operating company, becoming its President in January 1997. In 2003, Nigel was also appointed a Director of R.K. Carvill (Insurance) Ltd, a wholly owned captive insurance company of the Carvill group.

  • ANDREW P NEWMAN
    Director Carvill London Ltd.

  • Andrew joined CT Bowring in 1982 as a broker and was appointed a director of Bowring Financial and Professional. He moved to Carvill in April 1990 and was appointed to the board in May 1992. As Director and Divisional Leader, Andrew is responsible for the Specialty Casualty Reinsurance Division at Carvill. The Division represents a wide array of US clients across all Specialty/Casualty lines, including Errors and Omissions, Directors and Officers, Medical Malpractice, Fidelity and WCA. Andrew is a member of PLUS and is on the London Chapter Steering Committee.

  • MARK SYNNOTT
    Director Carvill London Ltd.

  • Mark has over 20 years experience in the reinsurance business. Mark joined Carvill in 2002. Prior to Carvill, he was responsible for CT Bowring’s North American marine reinsurance department. Mark was also a founding member of Nicholson Chamberlain Coll’s North American treaty reinsurance subsidiary, later becoming part of Aon Group Ltd. Mark later became a director and deputy underwriter of syndicate 205 at Lloyds of London, where he was responsible for Casualty business.

  • ADRIAN WENTWORTH-STANLEY
    Director Carvill London Ltd.

  • Adrian has over eighteen years experience in the reinsurance business. Adrian joined Carvill in 1998. Prior to Carvill, Adrian was a director of J.K. Buckenham Ltd and also spent 12 years at J. H. Minet & Co Ltd, where he was a Divisional Director responsible for the North American Reinsurance Division, specializing in broking to the London market, a variety of Property & Casualty Treaty Reinsurance programs. Adrian is a Director specializing in North American Casualty Treaty Reinsurance.

  • SEAN P RYAN
    Senior Vice President, Carvill America, Inc.

  • Sean is a Senior Vice President in the Norwalk office of Carvill America, Inc. Sean has over 15 years of experience in the insurance/reinsurance industry, and brings strong casualty underwriting expertise to his new treaty production role. Most recently, he was with Swiss Re America, where he was national casualty manager, facultative. Prior to Swiss Re, Sean was vice president, excess & surplus lines, treaty at CNA Re. Sean has a B.A. in Economics from Hamilton College. Sean joined Carvill in July 2003.

  • PATRICK M GONNELLI
    Senior Vice President Carvill (Bermuda) Inc.

  • Patrick is Senior Vice President of Carvill, based in the Bermuda office. Patrick has over 13 years of experience in the insurance and financial industry and is responsible for developing retrocessional business. Prior to joining Carvill, Patrick was Vice President at Willis Re, Inc., where he was responsible for client production and development of Worldwide Property Industry Loss Warranty business.

  • DR. STEVEN SMITH
    President of Property Solutions for ReAdvisory

    Steve is an atmospheric physicist, and is responsible for leading Carvill’s catastrophe modeling efforts, consulting with clients regarding accumulations and other catastrophe related exposures, and aiding in the development of ReAdvisory models and products. Prior to joining Carvill, Steve was the director of research and development at ACE Tempest Re, where he managed the team responsible for analyzing property catastrophe models, and led the company’s development of science-based underwriting tools. Steve is a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society, a member of the Institute of Physics, a Chartered Physicist, and holds a doctorate in atmospheric physics and a first class honours degree in physics, both from Oxford University. In November 2004 Steve joined Carvill and in 2008 was appointed as President of Property Solutions of ReAdvisory. In 2007 Steve won The Review Worldwide Reinsurance “Future Industry Leader of the Year” Award for his proven track record in innovation, leadership skills, deep technical knowledge and for being highly recognised and respected in the industry sector.
